Common Mistakes When Entering DStv Signal Settings

DWDStv Worcester team15 Oct 2026

Most DStv signal settings problems we fix in Worcester weren't caused by the dish at all. Someone changed a menu option, copied numbers off a website or rushed through the setup screens, and the picture vanished. The good news is that most of these slips can be undone from the couch with the remote.

Quick answer: The most common mistakes with DStv signal settings are typing in frequency numbers found online, choosing the wrong LNB type for your decoder and finishing the wizard before every tuner has locked on. Leave the satellite values on their presets, pick Single LNB for an HD decoder or Smart LNB for an Explora, and judge the result by signal quality.

Mistake one: copying a DStv frequency table from the internet

Search for a DStv frequency and you'll find long tables of numbers, symbol rates and polarity letters. Many were written for other countries or for older set-ups, and they don't always match a South African decoder. Type the wrong values in and every channel can disappear at once.

Here, DStv comes from the Intelsat 20 satellite at 68.5 degrees East. A decoder sold in South Africa already carries those details, so a home dish in Meiringspark or Langerug shouldn't need anyone to key in frequencies by hand.

Good to know: Already changed the numbers and can't remember the old ones? Stop guessing. Take a photo of the screen, then run the setup again with the standard options. Our walk-through of the installation wizard steps shows what each screen asks.

Mistake two: the wrong LNB type for your decoder

The LNB is the arm on the front of the dish that collects the signal. Your decoder has to be told which kind is fitted, and this choice causes more trouble than any other.

An HD decoder set to Smart LNB

A single-view HD decoder normally runs off a single LNB. If someone picks Smart LNB or Unicable in the menu, the box listens for a signal that never comes. You end up with a blank screen and a no-signal message on every channel.

An Explora left on Single LNB

An Explora or Explora Ultra has more than one tuner, which is how it records one show while you watch another. DStv recommends a Smart LNB on an 80cm dish for every Explora in a house. With the LNB type set wrongly, one tuner may work while the rest stay at zero.

This is when people go hunting for DStv smart LNB frequency settings. There aren't any numbers to type, because the decoder and the LNB share out the user bands themselves. DStv's help page on what a Smart LNB does explains the hardware side.

Moving up from an HD box? Our Explora installation service swaps the old LNB at the same visit.

Mistakes that look like DStv signal settings faults

Sometimes the menu is fine and the real problem is physical. Changing settings that were never wrong just adds a second fault. That kind of fault needs DStv signal repairs, not more button presses.

  • Cable in the wrong socket. The dish cable has to go into the port marked LNB IN on the back of the decoder.
  • Tired connectors. Worcester's summer heat and fine dust dry out cable jackets and loosen plugs, mostly on long runs out to garages and flatlets.
  • Watching strength, not quality. Strength shows how much signal arrives, but quality shows how clean it is. You can check your signal strength and quality on the decoder's own signal screen.
  • Something new in the way. The dish looks north-east and fairly high, so a tree that's grown or a new double storey next door can cut it off.

Rushing the DStv signal setup

The installation wizard is the full DStv signal setup. It asks about the satellite and the LNB, then searches for channels. The usual slip is pressing OK on every screen before the signal bars have settled.

On an Explora, give each tuner time to show a steady signal before you move on.

Farm decoders need extra patience. Long cable runs out to farmhouses near Rawsonville and De Doorns lose some signal along the way, which is why our notes on DStv on farms and smallholdings cover the heavier cable we use there.

Changing DStv signal settings for the wrong reason

Two things tempt people into the menus when they should stay out: the weather, and an account message.

During a storm

Heavy winter rain over the valley can cause rain fade, a temporary loss of signal that often shows as an E30-2 message. Editing settings won't help, because the picture returns once the cloud passes. If it doesn't, work through our checks for no signal after a storm.

When the screen shows E16

An E16 error means a channel isn't authorised on your decoder. Re-authorise through the MyDStv app, DStv's WhatsApp self-service or the Fix errors option on dstv.com, and check that the account is paid up. No change in the satellite menu will clear it.

Using house settings on a shared dish

Flats, school hostels and some complexes in Worcester run one dish for many decoders. Those systems often need values that only the installer knows, and DStv says the Smart LNB isn't meant for them. Our post on communal dish frequency settings explains what's different.

A safe check of your DStv signal settings

Stop as soon as the picture comes back. All of it is done from the lounge.

  1. Take a phone photo of the signal and settings screens before you change anything.
  2. Switch the decoder off at the wall, wait a full minute and switch it on again.
  3. On an Explora, press the DStv button, open Settings and then Satellite Settings. HD models keep the same option in their settings menu.
  4. Make sure the LNB type matches your box, and leave the frequency fields alone.
  5. Save, wait a minute, then look at signal quality on each tuner.
  6. Still nothing? Run the installation wizard once more, slowly.

Safety first: Don't climb a ladder or get onto the roof to move the dish, and never open the decoder or unscrew the LNB wiring. A Worcester roof in January gets hot enough to burn, and a dish needs a proper meter to line up anyway.

If the menu is right and quality is still low, the dish probably needs satellite dish alignment on a signal meter. That's a job for a technician, not a phone app.

DStv signal settings: FAQs

What are the correct DStv signal settings in South Africa?

DStv broadcasts from Intelsat 20 at 68.5 degrees East, and a South African decoder already has those values stored. The choice you actually make is the LNB type: Single LNB for an HD decoder, Smart LNB for an Explora. Leave the frequency fields alone unless an installer gives you values for a shared dish.

Can I use DStv frequency settings I found online?

It's best not to. Tables posted online are often made for other countries or older set-ups, and one wrong entry can wipe every channel. A decoder bought here already carries the right values, so the LNB type is usually the only setting worth checking.

Why does my DStv say no signal after I changed the settings?

The most likely cause is the LNB type. An HD decoder set to Smart LNB, or an Explora set to Single LNB, won't lock onto the signal properly. Set it back to match your box, save, switch off for a minute and check signal quality again.

Do I need to enter DStv smart LNB frequency settings?

No. Once you select Smart LNB in the menu, the decoder and the LNB work out the user bands between them. If one tuner still shows nothing after that, the cable or an LNB output is the usual suspect, and that needs a technician.

Who can fix DStv signal settings in Worcester?

Our team checks the menu and the dish together with a signal meter, across Worcester, Rawsonville and De Doorns. We quote before we drive out, and visits are often the same or next day, depending on the schedule.
