DVR Camera System Not Recording? Causes and Fixes

DWDStv Worcester team13 Oct 2026

Your DVR camera system shows live pictures, but when you search for last night's footage there's nothing there. Start with the hard drive. Most of the time it's full and not set to overwrite, or the recorder can't see the drive at all. Both take a few minutes to check from the menu.

Quick answer: When a DVR camera system stops recording, open the storage or HDD page in the menu first. If the drive says full, switch on overwrite. If it shows an error or no disk, shut down from the menu, restart and check again. Then confirm the recording schedule is on for every camera and the date and time are right.

Fix 1: read the hard drive status

Every recorder has a page that shows the drive's health. The menu names differ by brand, but look for words like Storage, HDD, Disk or Device Management. You'll need the admin password for most of these screens.

  1. Plug in a mouse and open the main menu on the monitor or TV.
  2. Find the storage or HDD page and read the status beside the drive.
  3. If it says Full, look for an Overwrite setting and switch it on, so old footage makes room for new.
  4. If it says Error, Abnormal or shows no drive, shut down through the menu, wait a minute and power up again.
  5. If it says Uninitialised, don't format it yet. Read the note below first.

Good to know: Formatting or initialising a drive wipes every recording on it. If you need footage from a break-in or an accident, stop here and ask our CCTV repair team to look first. We can often save the clip.

Why a DVR camera system stops recording

Once you've checked the drive, match what you see to the table. It covers the causes we find most often on recorders around Worcester. The same checks work on a 4 channel DVR or a 16 channel DVR, and most apply to an IP camera system too.

Fix 2: check the schedule and motion settings

The schedule switched off

A reset or firmware update can clear the recording schedule. Open the recording or schedule page and look at each camera in turn. Every channel should show a full bar across all seven days, unless you chose otherwise.

Lightning and power surges can scramble settings too. If the trouble started after bad weather, our after-storm checks for TV signal follow the same calm, step-by-step approach.

Motion recording that misses things

Motion mode saves space, but low sensitivity means people can walk past without starting a clip. Raise the sensitivity a step at a time and test by walking in front of the camera. If storage allows, continuous recording on the gate and front door is the safer setting.

Camera position matters too. A lens that only sees sky or a blank wall won't pick up much movement, which our guide to planning camera coverage explains.

Fix 3: set the right date and time

After a power cut, some recorders lose their clock and jump back to a default year. The footage is still there, just filed under the wrong date. Search a few days either side, then set the correct time and turn on automatic time sync if the recorder is online.

Frequent dips and cuts also stress the drive. A small UPS on the recorder, router and camera power supply keeps everything running through short outages.

Worcester heat, dust and your DVR camera system

Summer in the Breede River Valley is hard on electronics. A recorder shut inside a cupboard, a garage or a roof space can run very hot, and an overheated drive is a common reason recording stops on its own. If the box feels hot to the touch, that's a clue.

  • Give the recorder space on all sides, away from geysers and sunny windows.
  • Keep cupboard doors open or vented so warm air can escape.
  • Wipe dust from the outside vents with a dry cloth, with the unit switched off.
  • Don't stack other boxes or the router on top of it.

Dust and heat also age outdoor cables over time. Our seasonal maintenance checklist was written for DStv gear, but the same summer checks help a camera setup in Paglande or Meiringspark.

When the camera, not the recorder, is the problem

If a channel shows "video loss" or a black square, the DVR camera system has nothing to save. Check that the camera's power adaptor or central power box is plugged in and switched on at the wall. A tripped plug on the same circuit often takes several cameras down at once.

On farms near Rawsonville and De Doorns, long cable runs to sheds and gates pick up more damage from sun, rodents and machinery. Our post on farm and smallholding installs covers how we protect long runs.

Safety first: Camera cables often run along gutters and roof edges, and power supplies connect to mains electricity. Don't climb ladders, open the recorder or open power boxes to trace a fault. Leave that to a trained technician with the right safety gear.

Signs you need a technician

  • The drive clicks, buzzes or keeps showing errors after a restart.
  • The recorder won't finish starting up or keeps rebooting.
  • You smell burning or see a scorched plug or adaptor.
  • Several cameras lost picture at the same time after a storm.
  • You need footage saved from a drive that won't read.

If remote viewing also dropped out, the problem may be the network link to the recorder. Our network cabling team can check that on the same visit.

DVR camera system: FAQs

Why is my DVR not recording but live view is working?

Live view only shows what the cameras see right now. Recording needs a healthy drive with free space, an active schedule and the right date and time. Check the storage page first, then the schedule. If the drive shows an error after a restart, it may need replacing.

How do I fix a DVR camera system that says HDD error?

Shut the recorder down through the menu, wait a minute and start it again. If the error stays, don't format the drive until any footage you need is saved. A drive that keeps failing usually needs replacing with a surveillance-rated one, which a technician can fit.

Why is my DVR camera system not recording when motion is detected?

Motion sensitivity is often set too low, or the detection area doesn't cover the spot people walk through. Check both on the motion settings page and test by walking past the camera. Also confirm the schedule is set to record on motion for that channel.

Can a DVR be repaired?

Often, yes. Many faults come from the hard drive, the power adaptor or the settings rather than the recorder itself, and those are fixable. If the main board has failed, replacing the recorder is usually better value than repairing it.

Do you repair CCTV recorders in Worcester?

Yes. We check and repair camera systems across Worcester and nearby areas like Rawsonville and De Doorns. We test the drive, settings, cameras and power, explain what's wrong, and quote before any work starts.
